not a nobelist for nothing
Jon Fosse: Aliss at the fire. 2010.
A woman, Signe, stands in front of the window, she is watching outside, to the balck darkness, where there is nothing, where there is everything, where there is the man she loves, Asle, the man who never came back
My second Jon Fosse and after Morning and Evening (read in Finnish, Aamu ja Ilta) I read this Aliss at the Fire in English.
First of all
I love love loved this book,
that has to be said first even thogh
Fosse´s writing, yes, it definetly is not a cup of tee for every reader but for me, this is the finest tea there is in this world.
For me, to enjoy this book, it recuires certain and limitations, that is time space silence since for me it works like a meditation, like a ashtanga yoga practise since the text sucks me in, takes in all my concentration. I need silence, I need to be in a place of minimal interruptions since in Fosse ´s text
there is no breathing palces, no stops, the whole page is a text without interruptions, only commas can be found and the text keeps flowing (but you have to let it flow) and it is not that much of the happening only memories and worries and almost non existent movements in their physical excistence happens
and the text is a huge spiral going round and around and around and around
And they all are pretty much named with the same name (and the one who translates this to Finnish, congrats, for me, the most important thing was to be mindful about the shes and hes and what if they all are hän…?. Oh well, not my headache )
but as I said, loved loved loved this and for me Fosse is one of the Nobelists in literature who, for me, have really made the difference in literature, in writing and seeing the world and expressing it with words
