Graham Swift: The Sweet Shop Owner
My first Graham Swift but not the last.
This is the best of Bortish literature - the kind of you trust, the kind of you know it will all be well - the story, the gallery of characters, the period, the setting.
yes, there is this man, struggling after the war and he marries a very intriguing woman, secretive even yet she is the one who rules, the shop, the man, the child, their life even though she hides from people. She may not be well, yet people around her act as she is and this man, oh this way too soft and obedient man - he enables all this, the love from their daughter. he treis so hard, even later on to mend all with the daughter, but there is no use.
I loved this book. all of it.
