In London rain

when the flooding never stops?

Julia Armfield: Private Rites. 2024.

Three queer sisters,Agnes, Isla and Irene

one wealthy father, architect Stephen Carmichael, soon deceaced,

a glass walled house high on a hill,

two mothers, one gone to the water ( never came), one vanished mother.

A world that is soon under water. All the time rains.

In London.

Climate crisis above all, almost above the plot , the relationship between these very separate, different daughters.

a pshychological tension - is the world soon vanished all together, what is all this water, where does it come from (and this is maybe thrid book in a month/two that I read where worls is soon under water…. Emily St. John Mandel ´s Exit party, this Private rites, Megan Hunter ´s extremely wonderful The end where we start from) - so either I am following trend, turned in to a dystopian reader /liker/lover (very much doubt this!), just something pure random. Just something is written now a lot.

Of these three, for me the Megan Hunter `s novel presented itself as a total winner. This, Julia Armfield`d

In Private rites people live makeshift lives on the top floors of flooded tower blocks, travelling by ferry. All sisters love and work, Agnes swims, finds love, Stephanie, Isla and Irene lose their partnerships, lose their perceptions of the past, of their mother, their little sister.

Okay, not too much to say about this book. To me it was ok, Liked it enough to read it through but it didn ´t become my favourite book.
