mothering in the floods

in search of safety

Megan Hunter: The End We Start From. 2017.

I haven ´t posted anything bookrelated for ages. I have been travelling, out of my own space, not feeling the need to update any words on the reading but,

on with it,

I said to myself

and so, here one of the most haunting, atmospheric, interesting books (of nowadays one of my favourite contemporary writers, Megan Hunter). I loved Hunter ´s Days of Light, and this one, her novel, poemlike, prosegenre lines overwritten The End We Start From, made me love her even more. The novel (poem?) moved me, kept me up one night and it was powerful, the urge of this mother of one in the most peculiar circimnstances made me live with her her days, her darks night, the world flooding, London under water.

"At the start, there was no sun and no moon. She came from a hole in the sky, and fell slowly towards the water."

Yet again, there a re floods in the books I read. The world was flooding in Exit Party, London in Private Rites. Now in Megan Hunter ´s and can I just one more time praise how wonderful skilful poetical lyrical beautiful novel The End We Start From really is.

So, after reading Hunter ´s Days of Light I could only admire how versatile Hunter is. Days of Light was completely different from this, her earlier work but that suits me just fine, I don ´t ´t mind that at all since both of these works I have love and now I have The Harpy to read, just ordered, coming to me.

Now, in The End We Start From we are in the midst of a mysterious environmental crisis, as London is submerged below flood waters, a woman gives birth to her first child, Z.

"I hold my breast in my hand like a medieval painting, pushing the nipple towards his clenched mouth.
It is all I have. I am a one-trick mother."

The world is dangerous, they, this new family, they are in danger and they need to leave their home.

"The people built homes, and made children, and filled the world. But their faces were flat; they had left their joy and sadness behind."

They, and most closely this woman, wifelike to R, looks for safety, go from place to place, from one shelter to another, and this woman, alone since R has left somewhere, looking for shelter, safety, she hopes but she is left alone with this newborn baby and there is not much to eat but she keeps breatsfeeding, keeping her baby alive she is a first time mother, she needs to keep her baby safe and even though this is no where close to the life she once knew, lead, that corporate life, she needs to mother this child. The baby grows, opens his eyes, starts grasping things, crawls, soon stands up and all the time floods are taking over, taking over London and now that I have read a couple of dystopias of this kind, I think I am getting a fear of flooding.
