shadow worlds

dystopia, year 2031
Emily St. John Mandel: Exit Party. 2026.
An Exit Party and what consequences that party brought! California, year 2031.
United States have collapsed and California is freed form the peacekeeping troups. There has been disturbing times, chaos, uncertainty. Let ´s celebrate, they thought. New times, secure calm times, they thought, and there, in that party, things went very wrong.
A man vanishes and Ari, straight from 18 years in a prison, starts searching for answers.
Dystopia is one of my less read genres and I don ´t know wht, but now, all of the sudden I have read (at least) three books where there is water rising, floods, new worlds.
So, exporting teleporting, not a complete success this one and now, in the shadow worlds, there are doubles (people), doublegangers. Gloria/Nico, Ari / Ibari, Kareem…
Confusing.
Out of my comfort zone.
Definetly out of my comfort zone.
Baffeling, disturbing, interesting, slightly boring (for me, way too long, don ´tknow if it was the genre or just that I found it repetitive -I would like to see the two-page synopsis of this book :-)).
So, this book (which I did not know, overlaps St. John Mandel ´s previous books (that should have been in my knowledge, maybe I would have started with those…) it was about the world now, the world shattering, the one we live in now.
Exit Party is about the horrible leaders dividing the nations, the countries, continents, time. Cicil wars, people monitoring, surveilance and spys all around.
So, reader is sucked in different realities, different worlds, travelling in two dimension, maybe even three since there is also travelling between the two multiple (double) identities, ghosts = living ones without passport, papers, identity stats. Bodies with different lives, same childhoods, different futures, desert prison camps.
Confusing, yes, highly confusing.
I am not quite sure what I read, but the text was flowing and the characters were deep and round and a lot was happening, all the time confusion, crimes, challenges yet, for me, I found it a bit too long, slightly boring on the whole. Entertaining but a little boring at times , as said, with (too) many characters, very profound characters with histories, life stories and all these linked encounters and still,
once I got to the end - I felt the urge of starting over.
What did rellay happen?
Would I understand better the second time around?
