the Nobelist and a husband in exile

the surface level

Anne Carson: The Bauty of the Husband. a fictional essay in 29 tangos. 2001.

Okey, she is the Nobel Prize winner 2026 in Literature. Of course - me, loving literature, loving books - have a huge hole in my literary world: never read anything Carson has written.

Corrected that.

Bought the prettiest of her books (bought by the cover).
It is a beautiful book. Both the cover, and the contents.

I think I understood some, enought to clarify what was going on on the surface level. The myths and the intertextual references to the ancient Greek, to philosophers, to the ancient stories, belief, plays, I decided to skip since there was enough to read on the surface level, too.

I loved it. Loved the brilliant structure, the idea of John Keats, his idea of that the beauty is truth. But, basically to me, this book was about a marriage, of a woman who has a husband who cheats, who (his words) is in Exile for the next decades, he never truly let ´s go of the woman, sends letter, how he proceeds with his new mariage, his new sons but moreover, itis a story of this wife, now abandoned, betrayed, her thoughts on this husband, her life with her friend, the artist Ray, her thoughts on life.

On this surface level - after I mastered reading it since (her brilliant structure and placing the lines in a clever way) I "had" to sort of read it aloud to get the hang of the rhythm of the text. I think a lot about this book (essay, prose, poem) is about the rhythm of the sentences and as I am a lover of the rhythm in a text, I am a lover of this book.
