Roisin O ´Donnell: Nesting
I have been reading books from various Prize Long- and Shortslist so , naturally and because of the theme of this book, too, I bought Roisin O ´Donnell ´s Nesting.
O ´Donnell is an Irish author and also the setting in her book is in Dublin and also on the other side of the water, Sheffield.
Thematically the book is at outmost iimportance. It talks about violence in a relationships, in families, between married couples,
not the most physically violent, but the other kind,
the one that eats you alive, shatters the core of being an important person, a person with dignity or matter at all (and I am not saying that physical violence doesn ´t do the same, but it is different).
There is a young woman Ciara with her two little daughters. Ciara is expecting her third child and she makes yet another attempt to leave her picture perfect husband who accordingly is not so perfect in the shadows of their home.
O ´Donnell writes about the housing problems in Dublin netting the theme too Ciara living in a hotel, finally reaching for help to get out of her marriage, to keep herself and her little family safe and for them all to have a more balanced happy life.
She writes about the difficulties finding yourself, your strength after being abused, finding housing, finding work, finding way out of catholic "hell".
Okay, themes came way too close to me, my past experiences, (not the catholic bit, though :-))having to gone through way too much alike and I got sad, angry, frustrated, worn out - maybe that is a sign of a good book but maybe I would not have wanted to revisit those memories - but I did.
but so, theme wise perfect, the importance of raising the issues in this book, clearly pointed out,
frustrated by the always coming up theme that "a new man, a new love saves you" (oh so tiring, let the woman find her strength without the romance).
But, understand why this one is on the prize list, well done Roisin O ´Donnell but for me a bit too much (still not completeley healed?)
